MRSL’S Own Rugby World Cup Winner

Merrylands RSL Club has strong ties in the sporting world. For over seven years the Club has supported the Parramatta Two Blues Rugby Club and the Holroyd Parramatta Blacktown AFL Club to achieve common goals within the local community. It is from the Parramatta Two Blues where we met Simaima Taufa, who soon became a respected member of the team here at the Club as part of an employment support program initiated between MRSL CLUB and the Parramatta Two Blues Rugby Club.

Since her introduction to Merrylands RSL Club, Simaima has gone from feat to feat, achieving what most people only dream of. She was in the winning Jillaroo’s team in the 2017 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. In June 2018, Simaima was announced as one of fifteen marquee signings by the Sydney Roosters women’s team which will participate in the inaugural NRL Women’s Premiership in September 2018.

Simaima’s training leading up to the World Cup was intense, both mentally and physically. Not only was the training preparation draining, but juggling a work/life balance on top of that was a new challenge for her. But all the hard work had paid off as soon as she heard the end game siren and victory was locked in for the Jillaroo’s. “Both my dreams and my Father’s dream to make it into the World Cup and to be named in the final squad had been fulfilled, there was no greater feeling then that.” Winning the World Cup in her first year as a Jillaroo with some of the best team mates, family and friends supporting her along the way, was worth every sleepless night, every aching pain throughout her body and maintaining her full time job.

With this new achievement under her belt, Simaima is more determined and certain about what future she would like to see for herself. She anticipates to study Welfare and Education with hopes to continue working in High Schools developing students skill sets on and off the field, as well as develop the Women’s division 1 Rugby League Team she is part of and continue playing the sport she loves while hopefully maintaining her NSW jersey and Australian Rep jersey.

Merrylands RSL Club proudly sponsors Simaima and are very thrilled about her recent feats. Well done, we wish you the best of luck Simaima! You have a whole team here cheering you on!
