More than just a walk in the park…

$40,000 Raised at the honour our heroes relay walk.

It was a beautiful day with hundreds of walkers from Club’s across NSW gathering at Parramatta Park to walk the 42km relay to honour the 42 Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan and to raise awareness and much needed funds for the Veterans Benevolent Fund. Led by MRSL CEO, Mr Bryn Miller, the Merrylands RSL team raised over $3,000, contributing to a total of $40,000 that was raised on the day.

It is a sad fact that many Defence personnel return from active service suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) as a result of the situations they confront in the line of duty. PTS can often mean returning to a normal life is difficult.

Used to defending and helping others, veterans are often reluctant to seek help for themselves. Without the right support, many suffer severe depression, leading to drug and alcohol dependence, anger and violence, homelessness, criminal behaviour and incarceration or, worse still, suicide.

The money raised will go into the Veterans Benevolent Fund with money being dedicated to the Homes for Heroes equine program which provides safe and secure accommodation as well as rehabilitation services for veterans and their families who are struggling. Funds will also be dedicated to the Veterans’ Centres Network (VCN) that will nurture opportunities for veterans and their families to remain connected to self, family and their community ensuring they don’t feel isolated and alienated. The Veterans’ Centre manages the coordination of all services, support, training and engagement that the ex-service client requires, as a case manager.
