Chief of Army Grants $35,000 in Scholarships At MRSL

Merrylands RSL Club was honoured by the attendance of the new Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Angus Campbell AO DSC, at the 2018 Gallipoli Scholarship Luncheon hosted by the Merrylands RSL Club and sub-Branch on Thursday 19 April 2018.
The Gallipoli Scholarship commemorates the legacy of Australian servicemen and servicewomen who served in either World War I or World War II. It seeks to perpetuate among young Australians an understanding of those enduring traditions of perseverance, courage, self-sacrifice and mateship that were established so indelibly in the cause of world peace at Gallipoli and thereafter on other battlefields in the First and Second World Wars.

This year the Scholarships were awarded to seven direct descendants of veterans of the First and Second World Wars. The Scholarships, which are based primarily on need as opposed to merit and worth $5,000 each, will assist the recipients in their first year of University studies this year.

Interestingly, the Gallipoli Scholarship was launched at an ANZAC Service at Merrylands RSL Club in 1998, by the then Governor of New South Wales, Mr Justice Samuels. Merrylands RSL Club has since taken its commitment to maintain the Scholarship strongly and has now hosted the event for ten years.

Since then, over 100 first year students at various universities have received support from the Gallipoli and Bill Hall Scholarship Fund. This has been made possible by the generosity of donors from RSL and Services’ Clubs, RSL Sub-Branches, Veterans’ Organisations, Department of Veterans’ Affairs, businesses and individuals. A total close to $400,000 has been distributed from the Scholarship funds since its establishment.

The traditional event began with an ANZAC Commemorative Wreath Laying Service, then lunch followed by award presentations by the Guest of Honour, Chief of Army Lieutenant General Angus Campbell AO DSC.

Recipients were Oscar Ricardo, Eamonn Beatts, Zoe George, Josephine McGrath Weber, Tess McCormack, Cooper Thompson and Clarence Harre. Merrylands RSL wish each of the recipients the best of luck on their journey through university.

Applications for the 2019 Gallipoli and Bill Hall Scholarships open on the 1st of January 2019 and close on the 1st of March 2019. Please visit the website at to find out more about the Scholarship. We urge you to encourage all who meet the criteria to apply.
